The Dignity of the Gypsies
Christine Turnauer is a photographer with passion. Her latest series of photographs details her search for Roma history.
Her documentation begins in Gujarat and Rajasthan in northwestern India, where the European Roma have their roots. There, she met camel dealers, basket weavers, acrobats, and musicians – representatives of the professions she consistently encountered as she traced the Roma through Hungary, Romania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. The results of her travels are photographs of stunning quality. Her portraits are captivating – not because they appear to beautify her sitters or erase the traces of hardship from their faces – but rather because of the discernible sensitivity with which she approaches them.

Die Würde der Roma
Christine Turnauer ist Fotografin – und das mit Leidenschaft. In ihrer neuen Fotoserie begibt sie sich auf die Spuren der Roma und nimmt uns zunächst mit nach Gujarat und Rajasthan im Nordwesten Indiens, wo die Wurzeln der europäischen Roma liegen. Dort trifft sie auf Kamelhändler, Korbflechter, Akrobaten und Musiker. Berufe, die bei ihren Folgereisen nach Ungarn, Rumänien, Montenegro und in den Kosovo in ihr Blickfeld geraten und als verbindendes Element fungieren. Das Ergebnis sind Aufnahmen von umwerfender Qualität: Christine Turnauers Porträts beeindrucken, nicht weil sie die Menschen schöner machen würde, als sie sind, oder aus ihren Gesichtern die Spuren der Mühsal, der Entbehrung tilgen würde, sondern weil sie mit feinfühligem Gespür den Menschen begegnet.

In 2015, I travelled to Gujarat and Rajasthan in the northwest of India. The nomadic tribes that migrated west hundreds of years ago came from there, taking their skills with them. These trades became for me the bridge toward Eastern Europe. They are ironsmiths, camel-traders, basket- and broom-makers, shepherds, acrobats, and snake-charmers – and incomparable musicians. On both continents, their skills are less and less needed, and this also leads to more poverty.
On my return to Europe, my travels took me through Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Kosovo. In Kosovo, the poverty is accentuated by the wounds of war and the historically deep-rooted tensions between certain ethnic groups.

2015 reiste ich nach Gujarat und Rajasthan im Nordwesten Indiens, wo jene Nomadenvölker leben, die teilweise schon vor vielen Jahrhunderten Richtung Westen gewandert sind. Ihre Berufe hatten sie mitgenommen. Für mich bilden die Berufe die Brücke nach Osteuropa. Es sind Berufe wie Kesselschmied, Kamelhändler, Korbflechter, Besenmacher, Schäfer, Akrobat, Schlangenbeschwörer – und die unvergleichlichen Musiker. In beiden Kontinenten werden diese Berufe immer weniger gebraucht, und auch dadurch nimmt die Armut zu.
Zurück in Europa führte meine Reise nach Rumänien, Ungarn Bulgarien, Montenegro und in den Kosovo. Im Kosovo kommen zur Armut die Wunden des Krieges und der teils tiefe Hass zwischen den Volksgruppen dazu.
